Do you ever feel like your work lacks meaning?

Like you're just going through the motions, and there's no real purpose behind what you're doing? If you have, then you understand the importance of having a clear organizational purpose and vision.

Organizational purpose and vision are not just buzzwords. They are essential for creating a sense of direction and meaning in the work we do. When we work for a company with a purpose that resonates with us, we feel like we're part of something bigger than ourselves. We're not just showing up for a paycheck; we're working towards a shared goal that we believe in.

And that sense of purpose is not just important for us as individuals. It's critical for the success of the organization as a whole. When we're motivated and feel like our work has meaning, we're more productive, creative, and innovative. We're more likely to stay with the company long-term, helping to build a strong, stable foundation for future success.

I know from personal experience how important organizational purpose and vision can be. When I worked for a company that lacked a clear sense of direction, I felt lost and unfulfilled. I didn't know why I was doing what I was doing, and it made it hard to stay motivated.

But when I now work in my own company with a strong purpose and vision, it is like a breath of fresh air. I feel like I am working towards something important, and it gives me a renewed sense of purpose in my work. And that feeling of motivation and meaning translated into better performance, both for me personally and for the company as a whole.

So if you're feeling like your work lacks meaning, take a look at the purpose and vision of your organization. If they're not clear or don't resonate with you, it might be time to start looking for a company that does. Because when you work for a company with a strong purpose and vision, you're not just working for a paycheck.

You're working towards something meaningful and important, and that's a powerful motivator.

It´s not just about the bottom line!

As a business leader, you need to be able to articulate the WHY behind what your company does. If you can't explain why your company exists, or if you can´t relate to the purpose yourself, then employees will have a hard time understanding and relating to the purpose of their jobs.

Purpose-driven companies are more successful than companies without a clear purpose because they have a common vision of what they stand for and why they exist.

It's not just about the bottom line.

Employees who feel like they're making a difference in the world are more engaged and productive, which leads to better business results. Employees who are engaged drive better business results than disengaged employees.

Engaged employees are more productive. They're more likely to stay with the company, recommend it to others, and be less likely to leave.

Research shows that an engaged workforce is more productive, by 13% on average, compared to an unengaged one. That's because engaged workers are more motivated, they work harder and smarter, they have higher morale and they provide better customer service - all of which leads directly or indirectly back into your bottom line!

The data supports this idea, too: In an earlier study, researchers found that employees who believe their jobs have meaning--and thus, have higher levels of purpose--are more likely to be satisfied with their company and less likely to leave it for another job.

What does it look like in your business?

Changing old patterns take time

My advice?
Let it!

Many times, old structures and hierarchies are in the way of true change. You know that change that not only boosts engagement amongst employees and build culture, but also the kind of change that is necessary for the survival of your business.

Old patterns and obstacles often stand in the way and because of this many organizations never reach across the finish line.
The consequences?
The implementation of change won’t pan out the way you intend and instead, the organization loses continuity, efficiency, engagement and slowly but steadily, goes back to those old patterns.

Is your organization prepared for the speed of change and innovation that is necessary for its survival? If no – it’s time to put this topic on your agenda. If yes –
Good on you!

5. Position and Communication

Let’s wrap this week up with the final part of this series of the 5Ps – a framework on how to embed purpose in organizations.

We have talked about Portfolio Strategy, People and Culture, Processes and Systems, Performance Metrics and today, I will dive deeper into last and fifth P; Position and Communication.

When you’ve come this far in embedding your purpose, don’t forget to bring it out to the public.

My best advice is to stay true to your purpose and don’t fall into the Purpose Washing-trap. Fake or untrue expressions about purpose will be recognized as inauthenticity by the public. This will only harm your brand.

So, let the communication be aligned with your true purpose and let your purpose be aligned with the true you (the organization) – anything else will be ‘called bullshit’.

When purpose is embedded throughout the organization, your company’s position and communication becomes a natural extension of your core business - purpose so beautifully eliminates the gap between ‘the walk’ and ‘the talk’.

4. Performance Metrics

We are almost through this week’s series where I dive deeper in the 5Ps – a system for embedding purpose in your organization.

Performance Metrics is our fourth P.

Purpose communicates what your company is and aspires to be and therefore the Purpose Metrics should not only cover day-to-day operations but also management decisions as well as transformation initiatives.

Truth is, what you seek to manage should also be measured – not one time, not occasionally but on a regular basis.

Same goes with purpose.
My recommendation is that you identify the key performance indicators that are tied to the organizational purpose and then, you track them over time.
This will not only act as an incentive for putting purpose on the daily agenda but will also help you to see your progress and if you’re on the right track.

Invite your employees and stakeholders to take part of the progress along the way. This reinforces purpose and builds momentum for more engagement amongst your employees.

3. Processes and Systems

it is time to dive a little deeper in the 3rd P.
Processes and Systems.

Processes and systems look at the “how” of your business model: the operational initiatives, incentives and management tools your firm relies upon to create value.

When embedding purpose in your organizations processes and systems, it is vital to look beyond your four walls.

Look at your supply chain.
Are your choice of suppliers aligned with your purpose? Be brave enough to set some reasonable demands or be open to look for new suppliers that serves both you and your purpose.

Regardless of industry, most companies can embed best practices in many areas of their organization; from kitchen composting and office supplies to approving and supporting employees to fulfill a dream or work from abroad for a period of time.

By embedding purpose throughout your supply chain you create this ripple effect where more organizations are being nudged into doing the same – together creating a more fulfilling work environment.

Have you missed the two first posts I did about the 5Ps, you can find them in the blog posts below.

2. People and Culture

Let’s talk about the 2nd P.

This week I go trough the 5Ps which is a framework on how to embed the purpose in organizations.

The second P stands for People and Culture. Purpose always begins with human beings and a feeling of fulfillment (purpose) is becoming more and more important for these human beings.

Start early.
Begin in the hiring process to make sure that the one ending up getting the job also shares the values that support the company’s purpose.

Also, remember that your people have a tremendous power.
Employees are usually the single greatest force when it comes to “call bullshit” on companies not being true in their claims of meaning and purpose. Add to that, research shows that employees at purpose-driven companies are four times more engaged at work.
Can you even afford NOT embedding your purpose in the organization?

Yesterday I wrote about the first P - Portfolio Strategy and Products.

1. Portfolio, Strategy, and Products

This week I talk about the 5Ps.
A framework and guide on how to embed the purpose in organizations.

Today I dive deeper in the first P, which is Portfolio Strategy and Product.

When I talk about purpose when it comes to products and services it usually comes down to two things. Dare to remove products from your portfolio that no longer serves your purpose and instead introduce new ones.

You might think that changing your product portfolio is an impossible thing to ask for. But fact is that you have greater freedom and possibilities than you think to choose what your company does and how it can make a positive difference.

Research shows that companies that keep a static portfolio underperform long-term. My analysis of this is that this might be a result of customers’ needs constantly changing and actually moving towards more meaningfulness and positive impact on environment and their surroundings. Hence, it’s crucial to make sure your portfolio is up to date.

Is your Product Portfolio aligned with your purpose?

Tomorrow we’ll talk about the second P, People and Culture.

Follow my account in order to not miss the rest of this 5Ps Series.
