Do you ever feel like your work lacks meaning?

Like you're just going through the motions, and there's no real purpose behind what you're doing? If you have, then you understand the importance of having a clear organizational purpose and vision.

Organizational purpose and vision are not just buzzwords. They are essential for creating a sense of direction and meaning in the work we do. When we work for a company with a purpose that resonates with us, we feel like we're part of something bigger than ourselves. We're not just showing up for a paycheck; we're working towards a shared goal that we believe in.

And that sense of purpose is not just important for us as individuals. It's critical for the success of the organization as a whole. When we're motivated and feel like our work has meaning, we're more productive, creative, and innovative. We're more likely to stay with the company long-term, helping to build a strong, stable foundation for future success.

I know from personal experience how important organizational purpose and vision can be. When I worked for a company that lacked a clear sense of direction, I felt lost and unfulfilled. I didn't know why I was doing what I was doing, and it made it hard to stay motivated.

But when I now work in my own company with a strong purpose and vision, it is like a breath of fresh air. I feel like I am working towards something important, and it gives me a renewed sense of purpose in my work. And that feeling of motivation and meaning translated into better performance, both for me personally and for the company as a whole.

So if you're feeling like your work lacks meaning, take a look at the purpose and vision of your organization. If they're not clear or don't resonate with you, it might be time to start looking for a company that does. Because when you work for a company with a strong purpose and vision, you're not just working for a paycheck.

You're working towards something meaningful and important, and that's a powerful motivator.

Do well by doing good

Do well by doing good.
With one year coming to an end and another one approaching, many organizations reflect back to see how they have performed in reaching their goals as well as setting new ones for the up-coming year.
But it´s not only the traditional company goals that should be the center of attention here.

This year, also try look at your organizational purpose. Did your company walk the talk in 2022 and what´s in the pipeline for 2023 when it comes to living your purpose?

An embedded purpose has shown to improve employee-, customer-, and investor satisfaction, which in turn contributes to better performance and greater impact. A strong purpose will strengthen the balance sheet when it´s done correctly.
Companies with a genuine, lived purpose radiate authenticity and do well by doing good.

So, is purpose on your agenda for 2023?

What are the risks of not working with your purpose?

A recent study* interviewed 400 business leaders to talk about Purpose. There are many interesting insights and key take-aways from this survey and I will share more of my thoughts during the coming weeks.

First out, I want to reflect on the fact that 43 percent of the business leaders said that their company sees the organizational purpose mainly as a marketing and brand play.

It´s quite worrisome that almost half of the interviewed leaders don´t understand nor see the importance of an organizational purpose.

When companies don´t act in line with their purpose (what they say in public don´t match with how they act) they face both risks and costs when loosing brand trust, face increased legal actions and employees starting to look for jobs elsewhere where they can feel more proud of their employer.

I often talk about the success that a well-established purpose leads to when doing it right and for the correct reasons, but it is as important to talk about the risks you face when doing it for the wrong reasons.

What other risks are companies facing when not taking Organizational Purpose seriously?

How often do you reflect upon what´s behind your decisions?

How often do you reflect on what´s behind your decisions?

What´s influencing you and how often do you let your intuition guide you as a leader?

Many times, we make decisions automatically without even considering if it´s true to what we actually feel and believe.

As a leader today, you need to be in touch with your intuition and emotions. They affect you consciously or unconsciously. By being in touch with ourselves we become strong, good and empathic leaders, able to successfully lead and coach other people.

In my own experience, there has been times when I´ve let logic be the sole foundation of my decisions and it hasn´t always turned out well. I have said yes to job offerings because on the paper it´s a perfect match (even though my gut told me differently) only to realize a few months later that the job wasn´t right for me.

Today, my intuition is guiding me in every decision I make. It may not always be easy, and I face challenges and difficulties. But when my gut tells me something, I know that´s the only way to go.

I am true to myself.

So my question to you is how often do you let your intuition guide you?

Why are the majority of employees unwilling to step up and take responsibility?

Why are the majority of my employee´s unwilling to take responsibility and making their own decisions?

Well, have you looked yourself in the mirror?

One of the main reasons to why there is a lack of decision-making and ownership amongst employees within an organization is the management and its leadership.

An inclusive work environment creates security and trust and it is mostly up to the leader to initiate the process of creating this space.

An inclusive work culture stems from a leadership that is permissive, personal and transparent.

When we outsource the decision-making to where it really belongs in the organization (amongst the ones facing the actual problem or question), we take a big step towards creating prerequisites to take on more responsibility.

Decentralized decision-making increases flexibility as well as the ability to make quick decisions in order to meet the market's needs in new and innovative ways.

Looking oneself in the mirror is usually a great first step in many aspects of life.

When did you last have a look?

Innovation grows where purpose goes

Innovation is thriving in an environment where it is encouraged to learn and try new things. Where the employees´ thoughts and ideas are cherished, and they are allowed to try and fail. Because it is from our mistakes we learn and grow, as an organization but also as individuals.

This behavior feeds a certain culture; a culture where everyone in the organization has this amazing drive and passion about growing and learning, imagine what a place like that could achieve!

But how do we create a culture this inclusive and supportive?

Aligning on the organizations purpose is step one.
The purpose needs to be customer centered and keep the societies´ greater good in mind. This creates a collective focus, a sense of belonging and contribution.
It generates good energy.

With this collective force all eyes are set on the same goal.

Aligning the purpose might result in old patterns and methods being challenged and questioned, it´s an opportunity for new thoughts, growth and innovation. It also challenges you as a leader, are you ready to look at yourself and how you lead? Are you ready to change?

What characterizes your culture today? Does it encourage new ideas and innovation? If not, why?
What stands in the way between you and innovation? How can these obstacles be removed?

I´ve worked with many leaders across our country where I´ve witnessed them taking their first shaky steps in the beginning of the process to then see them (and their organization and employees) thrive in a culture where only the sky seems to be the limit.

Nothing gets me more excited than being a part of their journey.

If you are in it for the long run, it will pay off

Is your personal purpose aligned with your company´s purpose
and are your employees fully onboard and included in the process?

It can be difficult and feel overwhelming.
I get it.

Maybe you feel that your focus, as a leader, should be on something much more concrete, such as progress, efficiency and numbers.

As a leader you need to not only know your own purpose as well as the company´s purpose, but you also need to create the right circumstances for your employees to do the same.

But if you´re in it for the long run, setting your company´s purpose and running with it all the way through will pay off.
Also, when it comes to progress, efficiency and numbers.

According to research, and my own personal experience, companies with a strong established purpose are considered more attractive by employees.

My best advice is to make sure your purpose is clear and well-implemented in the whole structure of the organization. Your purpose needs to be a part of your strategy as well as in all processes. It needs to be painted on the walls (metaphorically) and run through your veins (also metaphorically).
It needs to be the center of attention.

When you have put the company´s purpose in the center you have taken a big step towards creating a work environment and culture to be proud of; a place that employees not only want to be associated with but also loyal to.
